Discover Santander

While there might be other coastal cities in Spain with a bigger reputation than Santander, don’t let that put you off visiting this enchanting northern city. Located roughly 280 miles north of Madrid, Santander can hold its own against any of the country’s other famous coastal destinations.

What’s so great about it? Well, there’s the natural beauty, of course, with golden sands and abundant greenery seemingly everywhere you look. And while the fire of 1941 destroyed many of its historic attractions, Santander still boasts fascinating museums, great art, and plenty of modern charm.

Planning to go touring in an RV rental in Santander? Here’s a guide to some of the best attractions on offer.

The Great Outdoors

As you'd expect given the city's coastal location, one of the best things to do in Santander is hit the beach. You have several options to choose from, but Playa de la Magdalena is a great place to start. Located east of the city center, this sweeping stretch of sand is the ideal spot to sunbathe or enjoy a refreshing dip.

At the eastern end of the beach, you’ll find Península de la Magdalena, one of Santander’s most popular parks. This pretty green space is the ideal spot for a picnic with a view, offering stunning vistas of the ocean and nearby beaches. There’s plenty of peace and quiet here if you’re keen for a leisurely stroll, while wildlife lovers will be delighted to catch a glimpse of the penguins and seals that call the area home.

Another of the area's best beaches is Playa del Sardinero, which is just to the north of Playa de la Magdalena. This beach puts many other city beaches to shame, boasting golden sands that front on to beautiful waters. It’s a very popular spot no matter when you visit, so you’ll need to be willing to share the sand with plenty of other sunbathers and swimmers. It's also a favorite surfing spot in the cooler months, so there’s always plenty going on if you just want to sit back and take in the action.

Camping in Santander

If you'd like to explore Santander in a motorhome rental, the first thing you'll need to do is book an RV in Cantabria. Once you've got your transport and accommodation lined up, you'll need to find somewhere to park your rig.

One Santander RV park worth a look is the Cabo Mayor Campsite, found roughly 10 minutes north of the city center. Located a short walk from the beach, the park features clean, grassy sites and all the essential amenities. Facilities on offer include a swimming pool, restaurant, and Wi-Fi.

Another option worth checking out is the Virgen del Mar Campsite, located less than 20 minutes northwest of the city center. Set in pretty surroundings near the coast, the park features more than 250 grassy sites. A swimming pool, children’s pool, and restaurant are all provided, while free Wi-Fi is also available.

These are just a couple of the Santander RV campgrounds available to choose from, so compare a few options before deciding where to stay.

Exploring the City

Man-made attractions in Santander don’t come any more famous than the Palacio Real de La Magdalena (Magdalena Palace). Constructed in the early 20th century, this grand palace sits on the Península de la Magdalena. Used as a summer home by the Spanish royal family up until 1930, it’s a beautiful building set in peaceful surroundings. Guided tours are available, so it’s well worth booking yourself a spot.

If you're an art lover, you'll want to make the Centro Botín the next stop in your RV rental in Santander. Though it’s one of the city’s newest attractions, this arts and cultural center has quickly developed a reputation as one of Santander’s must-visit sites. Its unique modern design gives you a taste of the contemporary art collection and temporary exhibits housed inside, while you can also check out works by Matisse, de Goya, and other famous names.

Finally, make sure you pay a visit to the Prehistory and Archaeology Museum of Cantabria before leaving town. This excellent museum is home to more than 1,200 artifacts from archaeological digs throughout Cantabria. Focused on the time between the Upper Paleolithic era and the Iron Age, it features plenty of fascinating pieces, including items from the famous Santa María de Hito archeological site.

Santander provides a range of experiences to suit all types of travelers. And with other great destinations like Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz also within easy reach, there's no shortage of reasons why you should consider Santander as your next RV vacation destination.
