The beautiful seaside resort of San Sebastián is one of Spain’s most iconic tourist destinations. Located a little over an hour east of Bilbao on the Bay of Biscay, the city is best known for its stunning beaches and gorgeous green mountains.
But there’s much more to do in San Sebastián than just work on your tan. Spend a few days in the city and you’ll be charmed by its historic Old Town, fascinated by its museums, and treated to its world-class gastronomic delights.
There’s plenty to enjoy here, so keep reading to find out how you can enjoy the perfect getaway in an RV rental in San Sebastián.
You’ll find a whole lot of natural beauty to enjoy in San Sebastián, but you can sample the city’s most iconic outdoor experience by spending a day at the beach. Playa de la Concha (La Concha Beach) is the city’s main attraction. This stretch of golden sand is one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in Europe. It’s a hugely popular spot to swim in calm waters or spread out a towel and soak up the Spanish sun, so you’ll surely spend a fair bit of time here during your stay.
Away from the sand, San Sebastián’s other distinguishing landmarks are its mountains. Monte Igueldo, which sits just to the west of the city, is a must-visit. Offering sweeping views of La Concha Beach and San Sebastián itself, this is one of those spots where you’ll be snapping off photo after photo. The views are also great during the ride up on the funicular railway, while there’s also an amusement park to keep the kids (or the young at heart) entertained.
Monte Urgull is another of the city’s peaks that’s well worth checking out. Overlooking San Sebastián’s Old Town, this pretty spot offers dense vegetation and more impressive views. There are walking trails for those keen to stretch their legs, and you’ll also notice remnants of fortifications that indicate the important role this location played in the city’s defense. The “Sacred Heart” statue, which stands over 39 feet high, is also found here.
If you'd like to camp in San Sebastián, the first thing you should do is book an RV in the Basque Country. Once that's sorted, you can search around for somewhere to stay.
One San Sebastián RV park worth a look is Camping Bungalows Igueldo San Sebastián. Located just a few miles from the beach, this popular campground features a range of easily accessible campsites. Open all year round, the park also features a swimming pool, restaurant, and supermarket.
Another option you might want to check out is the Igara campsite, located less than 20 minutes from the city center. Campsites here are spacious and set in leafy surroundings. Facilities include a swimming pool, supermarket, and bar.
There are several San Sebastián RV campgrounds to choose from, so do your research before making a booking.
If you want to get a taste of the history and culture of San Sebastián, head for the Parte Vieja (Old Town). Found at the foot of Monte Urgull, between the city’s port and the Urumea River, this charming quarter is a great place to wander around for a couple of hours or more. You’ll find gorgeous cobbled streets, beautiful buildings like the Basílica of Santa María, and plenty of great pintxo bars to enjoy.
If you’re a history buff, you’ll want to steer your RV rental in San Sebastián to the Museo de San Telmo. This popular museum, housed in a 16th-century convent as well as a new wing set into Mount Urgull, is the perfect place to go if you want to learn more about the history of the Basque Country. Exhibitions and artifacts here celebrate Basque history and culture, with highlights including everything from the swords of ancient rulers to modern football jerseys.
Finally, no visit to San Sebastián would be complete without a visit to San Sebastián Aquarium. One of the area’s most popular attractions, it’s found right next to the harbor. There are plenty of amazing underwater creatures to admire here, including tanks dedicated to sea life from the Bay of Biscay and the impressive skeleton of a North Atlantic right whale. And if all your exploring is making you hungry, you’ll be pleased to learn that there are plenty of great restaurants nearby.
As you've probably guessed by now, it can be pretty hard to resist San Sebastián's undeniable charm. And when you consider the fact that other excellent destinations like Vitoria-Gasteiz and Pamplona are nearby, you'll no doubt agree that when you rent a motorhome in San Sebastián, there's plenty to see, do, and enjoy.
