Discover Bilbao

Plan your next vacation to the Basque Country in Spain and explore Bilbao, the home of the famous Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry. Aside from this fantastic art museum, there are plenty of green spaces, beaches, churches, and other fascinating tourist attractions to visit.

Look for an RV rental in Bilbao so you have the freedom to travel throughout the region visiting other cities. Take a break from exploring Bilbao and make the short drive northwest to visit Barakaldo, under 15 minutes away, or Portugalete, less than 20 minutes away. Book an RV in Bilbao and drive south to Basauri, north to Getxo, or wherever the open road leads you next.

The Great Outdoors

Ready to get out and about in the great outdoors? Pack a picnic and head over to the hillside park of Parque Etxebarria, or Etxebarria Park. Try your hand at tennis or sit and let the kids play at the children’s playground. There are plenty of hiking trails to stretch your legs and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Bring your camera or phone and snap some gallery-worthy photos of the city of Bilbao from atop the hill.

Parque Doña Casilda Iturrizar, or Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, is an excellent place to go for peace and quiet without leaving the city. Sit near the pond and enjoy the peacefulness of the water, or take off down one of the walking paths winding through the park. Many locals hang out at this park, chatting with the vendors peddling their wares or listening to a live band in the evening.

When looking for some fresh air and green grass, spend an afternoon in Jardines de Albia Lorategiak, or Albia Lorategiak Gardens. Sit in the shade on one of the many benches throughout the park and admire the abundant flowers and plants cultivated here. Take in the beauty of the statues and fountains scattered through the park. There's a snack bar if you don't want to tote your own drinks or food with you when you visit.

Camping in Bilbao

Look for an RV rental near Bilbao and drive over to the Área de Autocaravanas de Kobetamendi, or the Kobetamendi Motorhome Area. This Bilbao RV campground is located next to the Bilbao Hostel and has electrical hookups and access to Wi-Fi. Park your motorhome rental and head over to the hostel for a quick snack of fresh bread or pizza, or challenge one of your fellow campers to a board game. Showers and restrooms are located inside the hostel.

After picking up your travel trailer rental in Bilbao, head over to Bakio and the Estacionamiento de Autorcaravanas. This Bilbao RV campground offers spacious campsites with electric hookups, water, and access to restrooms and sanitary wastewater disposal. Once you've set up your campsite, you can walk along the bay or along the promenade and find restaurants and shopping.

Spend a few nights at Camping Sopelana once you've found the best RV rental in Bilbao. Pull in and hook up to the electric, then slip into your swimsuit and head over to the beach. Take a hot shower after spending time at the beach and enjoy modern toilet facilities. Campsites are adequate for small to medium-sized motorhomes, but larger RVs will have difficulty fitting into the spaces.

Exploring the City

No visit to Bilbao is complete without seeing the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Even if you don't get the chance to go inside, the building itself is a work of art with its contemporary, curvy outline. This museum is part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and has several permanent and rotating exhibits. Most of the permanent exhibits feature Spanish artists such as Juan Gris, Miquel Navarro, and Pablo Rey. The Warhol Room is an entire room dedicated to Andy Warhol and his work.

Take an afternoon and visit the Biscay Foral Delegation Palace, also known as the Bizkaia Delegation Palace. This palace currently houses the executive branch of the Biscay government, but visitors are allowed to take a guided tour. When you enter the building through the main doors, you'll see cast-iron eagles holding a lamp in their beaks. These lanterns date back to the late 1800s. You'll notice that each floor of the palace has a different style of wall décor and window.

You don't have to be religious to appreciate the beauty of the Church of San Francisco de Asís, Bilbao, or Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís, Bilbao. Admire the stained glass windows that date back hundreds of years and the ornate wood and iron main doors. Once inside, you have the opportunity to view some of the Venetian mosaics preserved over time. One particular mosaic depicts the death and ascension of San Francisco.
