About Sarah Hawkins

We are proud owners of a SylvanSport GO, named "Coolest. Camper. Ever." by National Geographic Magazine. We love to use it ourselves as much as possible but love the idea of sharing it with others when it's not being used by us. We also rent out The Borg Van, a custom converted Ford Transit.

Second time renting The Borg for our annual camping trip in Big Sur. It’s perfect for those who aren’t looking for a fully-equipped camper van, but an elevated camping experience in colder temps. The van rides great and is comfortable for 2 adults + 1 dog. Recommend bringing a sleeping pad and extra blankets/sleeping bags for colder temps.

Overall it was an ok experience for our first rental through outdoorsy and with this owner, Sarah. I'll start with the pros:
Sarah was very quick in responding to our requests and questions. The pick up process was very easy and smooth. The van itself was good. It drove well and everything was in working order. The pull out compartment with biodegradable plates, bowls, utensils, etc was very handy, as was the few pieces of cookware included. The van had plenty of room for transporting all our totes and gear. The length and width of the bed was very nice for 2 adults and there was plenty of room.
The cons:
Even though the pick up process was smooth and easy, I wish that I could have met face to face with the owner of the vehicle (Sarah) at pick up. It would have been nice to do a walkaround and inspection together before our trip. Only because I would have known about the side door closing issue, the discomfort of the bed, and the limited floor space with the 2nd row of seats still installed. On the drive down to our trip, I noticed that a door was "ajar" by the light on the dash. We couldn't find the door, but eventually did. The side/sliding door needs a little extra help to close completely. You couldn't close it completely from inside, which was a bummer when loading up for the night, because you had to come in through one of the front door and clamber over the front seats and 2nd row of seats to get to the bed. Obviously this was a hassle when getting up to use the restroom in the middle of the night as well. The very back interior light would not go off unless this side door was completely closed which is right above where your head is when laying in the bed. lol. Speaking of the bed... very uncomfortable. My husband and I slept horribly both nights. In the description it described it as comfy with a nice comforter/blanket. We could feel the plywood bottom through the thin mattress and I had to use an extra blanket to cover me, since the included duvet/comforter wasn't wide enough to cover 2 people. If we had known this ahead of time, I would have made sure to bring extra foam/cushions and large blankets to make it better. The last issue was there were no pictures to show the limited floor space with the 2nd row of seats in. We have an 11 year old son who also traveled with us and our mini Aussie and they were both very squished and uncomfortable. There was an extra cost add on to remove the 2nd row of seats, which is fine, but I wish we had seen pictures to understand the difference in floor space with the seats in. There were only pictures of the seats removed. If I could have met and talked with Sarah at pick up, I would have paid the extra to remove them before leaving for our trip.
Overall we loved the experience and had a great time. The cons I listed just made it a little less pleasant. If I had known these things beforehand, I could have better prepared for our trip. Thank you Sarah for letting us rent your vehicle. It's definitely better than tent camping by far!! :)

Terrific communication, super easy to work with. The van was a perfect home base for my women’s motorcycle weekend.

The Borg greatly exceeded expectations. Tons of interior room and the bed was big enough for both me (6'2") and my partner (5'10"). Drives well and Sarah was super hospitable and easy to work with.

The pick up and return of the van couldn’t be any easier! Sarah was a great communicator the entire trip. The van is basic, but if you’re looking for an alternative to camping, this is it. We spent 5 days in the van and loved every minute!!

Picking up The Borg was easy, and we were able to leave our car at Sarah's house. The Borg handled well on the 80-mile drive to the camp site, even though the wind was blowing in from the coast! It had a reasonable queen mattress, clean, comfortable bedding, camping potty (yippee!), and great little pull-out cooking area with two burners. It came stocked will all the basics, and was comfortable for the two of us. Tinted windows offer some privacy during the daylight.
Issues: Trouble with Outdoorsy trying to add the second driver
Floor of the Borg has a variety of inclusions/ random spaces, so kept "stepping" through the outdoor carpeting
As mentioned by others, no curtains, so you'd better like the sunrise.
Privacy/sun shield for the front windshield only covers 1/3 of the window (privacy).
Overall a great rental, and we would rent this vehicle again!

The Borg had me at queen sized bed & comforter. So comfy! Easy pick up & drop off, owners are very communicative. Easy to drive. Check both mirrors for blind spot!

The Borg was such an epic way to explore beautiful California. The van worked amazingly up and down Highway 1, and was great on gas. Sarah made it so easy on us for pick up / drop off…we virtually had to do nothing once getting off of the train when we arrived, and vice versa when departing. She was very communicative and friendly. I would rent the same exact van again!

Host was amazing to communicate and coordinate with. It’s a great van for the price. The only things that were difficult for us was the lack of window covers and cruise control. If those aren’t things you need - then this is the perfect van and host.
